Jeff Bridges plays a run down, country western singer blessed with talent, but cursed in old age from the relentless sins of alcohol and cigarettes. What could have been, and felt like a modified version of the downfall of Mickey Rourke's Randy in last year's The Wrestler at least part way through, turns out to be something more of a personal triumph over addictions that all too often end in destruction.

The Hurt Locker shows us what it is like to be up close and personal with danger, with an unseen enemy who speaks a foreign tongue. It shows us what it is like to be afraid of dying every day or what it is like to eradicate all fear from your body and face that enemy with the utmost confidence. One being Julie Powell’s book of the same name, and the other being Julia Child’s memoir, My Life in France. The movie is directed by Nora Ephron who is an A-lister herself, and features the talented Meryl Streep as Julia, Stanley Tucci as Julia’s husband Paul, and Amy Adams as Julie.

A kid’s movie you might say. But ahhh, you would be so wrong. UP! is a current animated feature that is available for viewing in both regular and 3D versions. I myself went with no expectations for myself, only for the class of grade one students with whom I attended this feature. They loved it and sat with rapt faces turned towards the screen, laughing in all the right places and thoroughly enjoying the plot and effects. |
