Just as you don't have to be Ronaldo to enjoy soccer, you don't have to Michael Phelps to enjoy swimming. Not only that, but I believe you can enjoy it more than these sporting heroes of ours. Swimming is not just about competition, it's about relaxation, good exercise and above all loads and loads of fun. How many of us go swimming more than a hand full of times a year, not a lot I suspect. I believe its time to really promote swimming as an activity which offers lots to a lot of people. Young people, elderly people, people with disabilities, less sporty people, very sporty people, pregnant women and so on.
There are lots of ways to get involved in swimming, through schools for kids to local council initiatives and swimming clubs which cater for all age groups. Leisure swimming will give you confidence to do many other wonderful things in life, when you can feel confident in the less familiar environment of the water, then other challenges suddenly become a lot easier (its properties are very much underestimated). Many sport injuries can also be improves through swimming, the low impact nature of the sport is a great healer while providing much needed exercise.
So how can we enjoy swimming so much? Well, we see the Olympics and think that's what swimming is all about, and yes that it an aspect of it. But for the majority of us swimming should be about fun, if that be on your own, with friends or family. Swimming brings people together, to a different environment to that of the usual football pitch or tennis court. It's an activity which can be enjoyed without having to resort to competition and the enviable winners and losers. In essence swimming can be enjoyed at any pace you choose for yourself, be that splashing around, racing up and down or floating gently on top of the water.
Without question learning to swim and gaining confidence in the water is just the tip of the iceberg for what then can be attempted. Once you can swim you can learn to surf (a personal ambition of mine), canoe, sail, play water polo etc. All these are great past times and none are expensive. What I'm really trying to get to here is that swimming is for everyone unlike many other activities. So why not enjoy this great sport lets all go and dig out our trunks/swimming costume and go for a splash, take our kids, take our parents, take our friends, for what more could your ask for than to spend quality, fun time with those close to you.
