Page 1 of 4 The important things to think about when you want to grow orchids indoors are what kinds of orchids prefer an indoor environment and what the right conditions for these plants are. Another thing to be knowledgeable about is how to pot these indoor orchids and what other materials a pot should contain. Below are a few things to scout when you are ready to buy your orchid.
Orchid pots There is a wide variety of pots for orchids. The classic pots are clay pots made with small stones. These pots drain well as the moisture seeps through the pot. It also has drainage holes. Drainage is important when considering to buy a pot because when orchids stand in excess water or collect water at the middle, the plants will easily rot.

Ceramic pots are also quite popular. These can be designed into different shapes, patterns, colored, and glazed. The patterns allow holes to be carved out in order to provide ventilation to the roots. Plastic pots keep more of the moisture which can be counteracted by side vents to give the plants some air. Moisture is good to maintain the orchid’s humidity level but should not be in excess or the plant will rot. Another option can be pots carved out of tree ferns. These look very good with orchids and provide very good drainage and ventilation.
Potting mixes You will also need to ready your choice of soil mix and growing medium. There are different types of potting mixes. There are those made of bark, charcoal, coconut husk, or tree fern fiber. There are also those that mix different types of growing media. A mix could be composed of coconut husk chips, diatomite and others. Another example would be a blend of tree fern fiber, charcoal, aerolite, and peat moss. Bark, charcoal, and perlite are also often mixed together. These potting mixes are sometimes enriched with micronutrients. A great mix would be one that allows sufficient aeration and moisture retention. The true test of a potting mix is if it gives a healthy base for the orchid to produce flowers abundantly and at the right time.

Growing and potting alternatives Potting orchids should not limit you to pots as there are other ways to contain and present your orchids. You can use hanging baskets for them, too. If you think this can only be done outdoors, think again. With your creativity, you can plant your orchids in baskets you can hang near the window. A little improvisation is all it takes. You can also use bark tubes or wooden mounting boards to present your indoor orchids in a unique way. Whatever you use to plant your indoor orchids with your choice of pots and soil mix, just always keep in mind that as long as they allow ventilation and adequate moisture retention, all you need to add is are small ideas to make your orchids even more presentable. And really, do you need to put in too much effort? Orchids are already a knockout wherever they are planted.
